Smith's 50 Puts South Africa On Top Against NZ

Captain Graeme Smith made a steady, unbeaten 53 to guide South Africa to 86 for one at tea Wednesday after a rain-delayed start to the first cricket test against New Zealand.

Smith ensured South Africa overcame the loss of the toss, the loss of more than a full session to rain and cold conditions to place itself in a strong position at the first interval of a day reduced to two sessions.

South Africa's only setback was the loss of opener Alviro Petersen for 11 in the 10th over, when New Zealand succeeded in having an lbw decision which had been turned down by umpire Aleem Dar reversed under the review system.
