Rick Santorum edged out Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich to win the Alabama primary Tuesday, in the latest, crucial round in the state-by-state race for the Republican nomination to challenge President Barack Obama. Santorum held a narrow lead in the Mississippi primary.
Santorum’s victory in Alabama helps him lock up his position as the chief conservative alternative to front-runner Romney, who has failed to win the trust of the conservative Republican base.
Romney was hoping for a win to show he could muster the support of evangelical Christian voters in America’s Deep South.
Gingrich, who has been lagging nationally, needs a win to show he remains a viable candidate.
