NZ 144-5 In Reply To 238 At Tea Day 2, 1st Test

Vernon Philander and Morne Morkel took two wickets each as South Africa defended its moderate first innings total of 238 by holding New Zealand to 144 for five at tea Thursday on the second day of the first cricket test.

Philander removed Rob Nicol (6) and Kane Williamson (11) to take his extraordinary wicket tally to 32 in only his fifth test while Morkel bowled Martin Guptill for 16 and claimed the vital wicket of New Zealand captain Ross Taylor (44).

Four New Zealand wickets fell between lunch, when it had been 40-1, and tea in an extended second session, swinging the initiative in the match back toward South Africa.
