Michael Clarke made 151 and helped Australia add 70 runs for its last two wickets to claw its way back on day two of the first test against South Africa at Newlands on Thursday.
Clarke shared a vital 59-run partnership with tailender Peter Siddle to lift the tourists to 284 all out in their first innings.
Ryan Harris then broke through with the wicket of South Africa opener Jacques Rudolph (18) before lunch as the hosts ended the session 49-1 and 235 runs behind Australia.
