Nigamanand's Family, Guru Fight To Claim His Body

A battle of sorts is in progress at the Matri Sadan Ashram here as the late Swami Nigamanand's parents and family members began an indefinite hunger strike demanding that the Swami's body be handed over to them for cremation. The late swami's parents have come from Darbhanga, Bihar.

However, the late swami's guru Swami Sivananda is insisting that he would bury his body inside the ashram premises to create a samadhi to mark his fast unto death against illegal stone mining.

On Wednesday night, the Uttarakhand government decided to ask the CBI to probe the death of Swami Nigamananda.

A full three days after he died, Nigamanand’s body lies smothered by garlands in an ashram on the outskirts of Haridwar, as his family wrestles with his spiritual guru, the Swami Shivanandji of Maitri Sadan in Kankhal, for the right to cremate him, reports Indian Express.

Shivanand claims Nigamanand was “poisoned”, but doctors who attended on him for over a month said the only toxins in his body were those that were created as a result of his prolonged fast.
