Fidel Edwards and Devendra Bishoo resumed the West Indies second innings after lunch on Day 4 with India needing only one wicket to win the first Test at Sabina Park in Kingston on Thursday.
The West Indies lost their ninth wicket when Ishant Sharma had Ravi Rampaul (34) caught behind by Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Amit Mishra dismissed Darren Sammy and Brendan Nash in his successive overs to put India on the verge of victory.
Mishra first had Sammy (25) caught by VVS Laxman at short extra cover and in his next over trapped Nash pulmb in front of the wicket to reduce the West Indies to 188/8.
