Tokyo stocks opened 1.01 percent lower today amid worries that European leaders may not be able to come up with a solution to the debt crisis at a crucial summit later in the day.
The benchmark Nikkei index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange opened down 88.46 points at 8,673.85. Ahead of the European summit, expectations were waning that leaders would come up with a broad, concrete plan to contain the region’s debt crisis, said Hideyuki Ishiguro, supervisor of investment strategy at Okasan Securities.
