PSG Beats Salzburg 3-1 In Europa League Opener

Big-spending Paris Saint-Germain won 3-1 at home to Salzburg in a Europa League group-stage opener on Thursday.

Brazilian midfielder Nene, from the penalty spot, and Mathieu Bodmer scored in the first half. Jeremy Menez—an £8 million ($11.5 million) offseason signing by PSG’s new Qatar owners—made it 3-0 before Salzburg got a late consolation goal.

Besiktas beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 5-1 in a match overshadowed by Turkish-Israeli political relations.

Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers lost 3-0 at home to Russia’s Rubin Kazan after both teams had a penalty saved.

Lazio was reduced to 10 men before drawing 2-2 at home to Vaslui of Romania.
