Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi began his 72-hour-long fast on his birthday at the tightly-guarded Gujarat University Exhibition Hall in order to, what he called, "cleanse" himself of any ill-will towards those who, he said, have "defamed" Gujarat and him on the issue of 2002 riots.
