Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi began his 72-hour-long fast on his birthday at the tightly-guarded Gujarat University Exhibition Hall in order to, what he called, “cleanse” himself of any ill-will towards those who, he said, have “defamed” Gujarat and him on the issue of 2002 riots.
Watched by the phalanx of senior BJP leaders led by L K Advani, who descended here to express solidarity with the Gujarat leader, Modi said, his fast was meant to promote unite, harmony and brotherhood in the state.
