A special court todayconvicted all 269 police, forest and revenue department officials accused in the Vachathi case relating to atrocities on tribal people including rape of several women during a search for smuggled sandalwood.
The verdict came after a 19-year-long wait for the victims who were subjected to brutalities by the officials during a raid on Vachathi village in the district. Amid tight security, Special Judge-cum-Principal District and Sessions Judge S Kumaraguru pronounced the verdict, convicting 126 forest personnel, including four IFS officers, 84 men from police and five from the revenue department. Of them, 17 were convicted of rape charges.
